behind the door

ドアの向こう

There is a quiet pleasure in muffling. The reduction of a sound to its structural skeleton — what passes through, what is absorbed, what diffracts at the seam — has its own kind of warmth.

A wall is a filter, and a beautiful one. Less arbitrary than most plugins I own. Mass, density, a coincidence frequency at the heart of every panel. The equation fc = (c²/2π)·√(ρs/Bp) doesn't need to be tuned by ear; thickness, density, Young's modulus, damping go in, and the filter response comes out.

door is a small audio plugin built on this physics. Six materials — Shoji, Light Wood, Solid Wood, Glass, Steel, Soundproof — each with its own fingerprint of frequency response. Slide the angle and the door opens; the hidden sound comes through with a colour that is exactly the material's.

The wall, as a plugin. Quieter version, exactly the shape the material would make.
