REVERSTONE plays out on a Reversi board. Each move triggers a sound; the board state generates music. Playing the game is making music.

The work began as a study of how a finite-state game can become a continuous musical surface. The colour of every disc is also the colour of a tone; flipping the board flips the music with it.

Origin

The board was already singing — before anyone listened. Two colours, two voices. A chain of flips, a chord spreading. An 8×8 grid, a scale. The endgame, a narrative arc. And reversal — the music rewriting its past.

Most generative music hides its rules. The board does the opposite. A move is placed; stones flip; a scan line passes through them; a sound rings. The cause is in the eye before it reaches the ear. What happens is unpredictable, and at the same time visibly inevitable.
