the board was already singing

盤面のこと

There is a thought that returns when I watch the board fill: the music was always there. Two colours, two voices. A chain of flips, a chord spreading. The 8×8 grid, a scale. The endgame, a narrative arc. And reversal — the music rewriting its past.

For a long time I was searching for a generative engine that could play itself, but I kept arriving at one of two failures. Either a black box that spat sound — rules invisible, music untethered — or a music-making toy that demanded the player's intention. Neither felt right.

Reversi solved this without my knowing. The rules are visible — every flip is right there in the eye before it reaches the ear. And the player isn't asked to make music. They are asked to play to win, or simply to play. The music happens at the side of all that.

A board that plays itself, and plays you back. REVERSTONE.
